About the Schools....

School District #37 was created as a small district to save the village of Gretna in 1888. The first school to serve Gretna children was located across the road from the LaBorde cemetery outside Gretna. A two-story brick schoolhouse was constructed in 1898 south of Angus Street across from St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Its size was doubled in 1908, and a gymnasium was added in 1936.

As the village grew, so too did the school district. Through minor consolidation over the years and a major consolidation in 1958, the district has grown to its present size of 70 square miles.....and growing. On December 6, 1994, a bond was passed to allow construction of a middle school designed with the flexibility to allow it to be converted to a high school when student growth would cause the need for such a facility. The opening is scheduled to be ready for the 1997-98 school year and will house grades 5-8.
Located just ten miles from the city limits of Omaha and within 20 minutes driving time of the major shopping areas of Omaha, the district has become the home of numerous commuters. The community uniquely weaves its large city ties with a rural character as agriculture remains the primary industry of the area.

Education has long been important to the patrons of the Gretna District. In 1985, Gretna became the 37th school and one of the smallest schools in the state to be granted AA Accreditation by the Nebraska Department of Education. Gretna has gained a reputation for providing fine educational opportunities, exemplified by excellence in academic achievement, high graduation rates, and a disciplined environment. In addition to tradition of quality education, a strong extracurricular program with tremendous success in the arts is enthusiastically supported by the patrons and the Board of Education.
