Course Description:
Students will develop an understanding of current controversial issues that occur
in our society and the world. They also will formulate possible solutions to these
problems.
Required Material:
Textbook: None
* Current events magazine provided by the school.
Notebook
Something to write with.
Students are responsible for all material presented in class.
Attendance:
STUDENTS are responsible for seeing the instructor for any work missed
due to an absence. Check with the instructor the day that you return to school
to get any missed work. You have the same number of days that you missed school
to get your work done. Failure to do this will result in a late grade.
Evaluation:
Debates: Each student will be responsible for researching a current controversial
topic and engaging in a debate with another student who is taking the opposite
viewpoint. Each member of the group will receive an individual grade for each
debate. The number of debates each student will be responsible for will vary depending
on the amount of time it takes to present them.
* Following each debate will be a class discussion will be held that each student
is expected to participate in.
Daily Work: Student will complete a reaction sheet following each debate
or classroom discussion on news articles/stories that occur.
* Daily work must be completed each day in time for class. An assignment not completed
by the assigned time will still be completed. The highest possible grade on a
late assignment will be a 70%. .
Additional Work: Students are also responsible for films, group activities,
and any other assignments that the instructor feels are necessary.
* All reading will be done in class.
* Cheating on any assignment may automatically result in a ZERO. In addition your
parent/guardian may be notified and additional punishment may be assessed.
* Grades will be figured by adding your point total accumulated from debates and
daily work, plus any other work assigned by the instructor and dividing the total
points possible into this number. Semester grades will be figured by averaging
the two quarter scores together.
Course grades will be assigned as follows:
A: 100% - 94%
B: 93% - 86%
C: 85% - 78%
D: 77% - 70%
F: 69% and below
Procedures:
* Students are to be in their assigned seats shortly after the bell rings and
should remain there unless they have permission.
* Students must first come to class before going to the bathroom, phone, office,
or nurse. If not, the students must bring a signed pass with them to class.
Failure to do so will result in a tardy.
* No bright red or bright colors should be used on assignments that will be
handed in. If this occurs the student will have to recopy the work.
* Gum will only be allowed if the instructor does not see it.
* No candy or food is allowed in the classroom without the teachers permission.
* Drinks are not allowed i n the classroom, unless it is water in a clear water
bottle.
* Please recycle your paper. The box is located in the front of the classroom.
* Bring all required materials to class every day unless the instructor tells
you otherwise.
* If you wish to use the restroom at the start of class, you must have permission
first or it will be a tardy.
* All desk must be returned to the place they were at the start of the period
before you leave the classroom.
* All students will help pick up any paper that is on the floor at the end of
the period and throw it away in the trash.
* DO NOT STAND BY THE BACK DOOR AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, REMAIN AT THE DESK!!
