Getting Started:
A. A Definition of Post-Secondary Education
Any further education after high school--private career schools,
technical colleges, community colleges, four year colleges or universities--can
correctly be called Post-Secondary Education or "college."
Going to college does not mean just a four year school.
B. Why go to College?
To achieve a Personal Goal?
To increase Earning Power?
To prepare for a Career and Expand my Learning?
For Extracurricular Activities and Social Life?
The influence of Family and Friends?
Before you decide on whether or not you want to go to college, think
of the reason(s)
why you want to go. Is "college" the right answer for
YOU? What "type" of college (technical or community college,
four-year college) would be the best fit for me?
C. Should I go to College?
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Is my high school record average or better?
2. Do I know how to study?
3. Do I enjoy studying and doing academic work? OR: Hands on work?
4. Do I like to read?
5. Can I read quickly and comprehend well?
6. Can I write well, using good grammar, mechanics, and punctuation?
7. Do I plan to enter a field that requires college training?
8. Do I really want further education? If so, for how many more
years?
9. Do my scores on the PSAT, ACT, or SAT show an aptitude for college
work?
10. Have I prepared myself adequately by taking the necessary classes?
(For
example: College Prep Classes?)
