HIGH SCHOOL PLANNING

High School Transcripts:

A transcript is an official, permanent school document that lists a student's academic record. The transcript includes semester grades and credits earned for each course beginning in ninth grade. The transcript is also a record of the student's GPA and Class Rank, and includes test scores such as the ACT and SAT.

Grade Point Average: (GPA)

A GPA is the average of all of a student's semester grades starting with first semester of the freshmen year. At GHS there are no weighted grades. Each course counts the same and each grade earned is worth a certain mark point:

1 (A) = 4.0 mark points A cumulative GPA is the average of a
2 (B) = 3.0 student's grades added together
3 (C) = 2.0 semester by semester.
4 (D) = 1.0
5 (F) = 0.0

Here is an illustration of how to determine your GPA: (NOTE: Classes that meet every day for a semester earn 1.0 credit at GHS. PE 9 and PE 10 meet every other day and so earn .5 credits per semester.)

Class---------|-----Grade-----|-----X-----|-----Credit-----|=|-----Mark Points Earned

English 9 -----| -----|2/(3.0) -----|X -----| -----|1.0 ------|= -----| -----|3.0

Am. History I -----||2/(3.0) -----|X -----| -----|1.0 ------|= -----| -----|3.0

CP Phys. Sci -----| 1/(4.0) -----|X -----| -----|1.0 ------|= -----| -----|4.0

Algebra -----| -----| 1/(4.0) -----|X -----| -----|1.0 ------|= -----| -----|4.0

Keyboarding -----|2/(4.0) ------|X -----| -----|0.5 ------|= -----| -----|2.0

Credits Attempted: 5.5
Credits Earned: 5.5
Total Mark Points: 19.0

GPA: Total Mark Points (19.0) divided by Credits Attempted (5.5) = 3.46 (3.455)

Class Rank:

All students in grades 9-12 are ranked in their class based on their GPA. A student with a perfect 4.0 GPA would be ranked #1 in his or her class. The lower the GPA, the lower the class rank. Ties are allowed; for example, if there are three students with 4.0 averages, each is ranked #1. The student with the next highest GPA would be ranked #4. Rank can be important when applying for colleges, scholarships, or employment. REMEMBER: Rank is determined by grade point average, GPA's are based on semester grades, and GPA's begin accumulating first semester of the freshmen year--it is very important to get off to a good start academically as a freshman!
